Wellington City Council is a territorial authority in New Zealand, governing the country's capital city Wellington. It is one of nine territorial authorities in the Greater Wellington Region.
Wellington became the capital of Aotearoa, replacing Auckland, in 1865. Consequently the population rapidly grew from around 7,000 residents to 49,344 by the end of the century. As of June 2022 the Wellington city had a population of 213,100.
