Wellington City Council Arts Bonus Scheme

Wellington City Council initiated the Arts Bonus Scheme in 1983, at the time the only one of its kind in New Zealand. It provided an option for property developers to increase the floor space of a development by 5% for every 1% of the total building expenditure that was dedicated to the commissioning of new public art works for the building.

The scheme was the subject of a City Gallery Wellington exhibition, symposium and exhibition catalogue, Public Art/Bonus Art, in 1988.

Thought officially the scheme is said to have ended in 1991, the fund appears to still have existed in 1993.
