New Plymouth District Council

Also known as:

  • Te Kaunihera ā Rohe o Ngāmotu

In its current form, the New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) was established through the 1989 territorial authority reforms. The new Council incorporated the former regional bodies of New Plymouth City Council with Clifton County Council (established in 1885), Inglewood County Council (established in 1902), and Waitara County Council (established in 1904).

The NPDC serves a region on the northern coast of the Taranaki region. Across this area it has a goal to preserve local cultural heritage items, such as buildings, structures and areas, archaeological and waahi tapu sites.

Along with Whanganui and Manawtū, the Taranaki region promotes engagement with public art through the Coastal Arts Trail.
