Description
This site-specific mural, commissioned for the opening of the then-new Elma Turner Library, depicts a variety of ways that knowledge has been recorded and communicated across the ages. A range of cultures and epochs are featured including Palaeolithic rock art (2500 BC); Egyptian Hieroglyphics (1350 BC); Celtic verse (800AD); and Aboriginal, Pacific and Māori art forms.
Elma Turner was a long-time high school teacher who served as a Nelson City Councillor from 1972-1989. She was a long-time advocate for free public libraries, and was integral in establishing Nelson's municipal library network. The Elma Turner Library, which opened in 1990 and was named in her honour, was Nelson's first fit-for-purpose municipal library building.
