Description
Painted in a nostalgic palette of black, white and sepia, this mural is based on a photograph of Alexander St, Te Awamutu, made by ‘Hawley’ in the early 1900s. The Bank of New Zealand is on the right with the Commercial Hotel behind. A figure, standing front and centre, looks back at the photographer. The original photograph is available online at Te Awamutu Museum.
Originally commissioned with funding from the Keep Te Awamutu Beautiful Society (KTAB), a project to restore the mural was run by the KTAB in 2008 with the assistance of the artist and donations from the community.
