Sopolemalama Filipe Tohi

b. 1959

Sololemalama Filipe Tohi was born in Tonga and moved to Aotearoa in 1978.

He is a specialist in the traditional Tongan cultural practice of lalava (sennit lashing). Tohi uses lalava motifs in a range of media giving them a contemporary twist through the designs, forms, or layering materials creating. Tohi has described his modifications as 'lalavaometry'.

More recent significant works include 'Halamoana' (2003) in New Plymouth and 'Hautaha' (2004) in Onehunga.
