Robert Nettleton Field

b. 1899d. 1987

Born in Kent, England, Robert Nettleton Field studied at the Royal College of Art (London) alongside the likes of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. He migrated to New Zealand in 1925, through the La Trobe Scheme, to teach at the Dunedin School of Art. Field moved to Auckland in 1945 where he promoted the study of ceramics resulting in a new generation of potters including Barry Brickell, Len Castle, Patricia Perrin and Peter Stitchbury.

Retiring in 1960, Field continued to experiment with art till his death in 1987.
