Born in London, Laurence Karasek studied painting at Bromley College of Art and the Royal Academy School, London, receiving the Leverhulme Traveling Scholarship at graduation in 1962. He was a Lecturer in Art at Dewsbury Technical College (1962-76), and exhibited widely in England before relocating to Christchurch, New Zealand where he took up a position as Lecturer at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in 1967. Subsequently, in 1971 he took positions at the University of Denver and the University of Montana (both in the USA), being appointed chair of the Department of Art there in 1976.
Karasek has an extensive creative portfolio. His art can be found in public and private collections internationally as well public sculpture commissions, landscape, exhibition and children's playground design.
In 2005 he became a Swiss resident and as a professional artist, began making and exhibiting large format paintings. He returned to the United States in 2007.
