International Society for Education through Art (InSEA)

The International Society for Education through Art (InSEA) is an international association founded in 1951 to promote cultural education, aesthetic education and the discussion of art. It operates as a non-governmental organization and official partner of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and a non-profit organisation with the purpose is to promote and advance education through art, design and crafts in all countries, in addition to nurturing intercultural understanding.

The society was founded at a seminar on art education held in Bristol under the auspices of UNESCO, entitled The Visual Arts in General Education, and attended by 20 nations. The first constitution was drawn up in Paris in 1954. InSEA was granted consultative status to UNESCO in 1963. In the same year, it merged with the FEA (Fédération Internationale pour l'Éducation Artistique), an international association for art education founded in Bern in 1904.

The society has been holding world congresses since 1957, and regional congresses/seminars since 1970. The first Southern Hemisphere world congress was held in Adelaide, Australia, in 1978, attended by members of the NZ Council for Educational Research; and the first Regional Congress in Darwin, Australia, in 1989. New Zealand delegates attended both events. Archives NZ (Department of Education) have records of the 23rd INSEA conference in 1989, which had a particular focus on ‘Art in Schools’.
