Cutter Pickmere Thorpe & Douglas

Thorpe Cutter Pickmere & Douglas was an architectural firm based in Auckland. They formed in 1950 to work on a major project: the Auckland Hospital Board’s National Women’s Obstetrics and Gynecological hospital at Green Lane.

“The associate, Bill Climie was made a partner in 1972 and then, later, Ken Wall and Ray Horten. Jack Manning was supposed to too, but Pickmere wasn’t too forth coming about the whole idea. Pickmere retired from the firm around 1975 and passed away on the seventh of November, 1984, at the age of seventy three. Ken Wall eventually took over the firm, shutting down the Auckland office, and moved down to finish off the two hospitals, Wellington and Christchurch in 1974. Douglas stayed with the firm until 1981. The firm operated under the name Cutter, Pickmere, Douglas and Partners until 1985. The Christchurch and Wellington offices were reconstituted as separate practices. Climie took over the Wellington office, forming the firm Cutter, Pickmere, Climie and in 1986 left to form the firm Booth,…” [clipping provided by Greg Smith – trails off, from Auckland Museum Library catalogue …]

"The branch office set up in Wellington was mainly for the New Zealand Broadcasting work. Christchurch was for the Canterbury Educational Board work.” [ibid.]
