Civic Square Development Project

An organisation founded for the development of Wellington's Civic Square between 1987 and 1999. This space was gifted the name Te Ngākau (the heart) by local iwi Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika a Māui in 2018.

The group included Wellington City Council, Athfield Architects, Craig Craig Moller, Stephenson & Turner, Architecture+ and Opus. Through the project a number of buildings around the Square were developed including: Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui Wellington Central Library, Civic Carpark and Square, Capital Discovery Place (Capital E), Sea to City Bridge, restructuring of the Town Hall and conversion of the former library to Te Whare Toi City Gallery Wellington.

Several public artworks were part of the development.
