Description
A sign installed with the work explains how this whakairo is part of a series commemorating Tūhourangi and Ngāti Tūwharetoa whakapapa of the Rotorua and Taupō area.
The work was gifted to the people of the Taupō District in 1930 by Mrs Ruihi (Lucy) Rongoheikume Reid (the artist’s niece) and her husband George Reid. Originally installed as the entrance to Tongariro North Domain, it was moved to the current location in 1969.
The wharenui Te Aroha o Rongoheikume (for the love of Lucy Reid) that greets visitors entering Taupō Museum, was carved by Tene Waitere at around the same time.
