A plaque installed with the work reads:
"This stained glass window was installed as a memorial to John Henderson Percy 1930-1983 by his friends across the University and elsewhere, and the School of Engineering. JOHN was a student of the School of Engineering, graduating B.E. ( Hons ) in Civil Engineering in 1953. / JOHN was also a member of the staff of the School from 1954 to 1961, and from 1967 to 1983, Professor of Mechanical Engineering from 1970, and head of Mechanical Engineering from 1980. / The Design, inspired by a photo-elastic image of a strength of materials test specimen, was transposed by Pat Hanly. The glasswork was executed by Benjamin Hanly, and Suzanne Johnson."
