Description

A twisting sculpture, fabricated in M10 aluminium, that is representative of Newmarket's industrial past.

Commissioned by the Newparket Borough Council for the Newmarket centenary celebrations. Szirmay's design won the Smirnoff Award which helped pay for its construction. An inscription with the sculpture reads: "In commemoration of the Borough of Newmarket. 104 years of service to the Community."

The base contains a time capsule of articles placed in it by the mayor at the time, Mr W. White.

The piece was installed in 1969 on the same site but moved to its present location, closer to Broadway, in 2010.

In February 2023 the sculpture was removed, and underwent repairs to treat damage that had accumulated since the 2010 re-development. A permanent low-profile plinth was created while it was away, and it was returned to the site in June 2023.
