Description

An information panel installed with the work reads:

“This mural includes a view of one of the first wineries in New Zealand. Ellis and Sons Winery of Clifton Road Golden Bay established 1968. They made beverages from locally grown fruits for a keen local market and shipped barrels over to Nelson. The winery prospered until it was dramatically destroyed by a flask flood in the mid 1930s.

“Bert Wagenvoort was commissioned in 1992 to create this mural which has become a respectable town feature. Renovation of the artwork in 2006 by C.J. Finlayson was made possible by members of the wider community donating funds to the project. Thanks also to - Take Note Takaka; The Brigand, Norton Feasey Assoc; G.B. Surveyors; The Mussel Inn; Community Arts Council; Bob Wells; Trash Palace; Mana Plumbers.”
