Te Warihi Hetaraka

Of Ngāti Wai, Ngā Puhi and Tainui decent, Te Warihi Hetaraka was born in Whāngarei. He is an authority on whakairo and toi Māori and has been carving since 1960.

He was chosen by kaumatua as a 15-year-old to represent the tribes of Tai Tokerau in the first graduating cohort taught by Hōne Taiapa at the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute, Rotorua. He graduated in 1970 alongside Clive Fugil, Tutu Honotapu, Kapua Riini, Hoani Korako Arahanga, James Rickard, and Jimmy Fergus. Since graduating he has worked continuously to preserve and disseminate mātauranga Māori.
