Robert Jahnke was born in Tairāwhiti and recognises his decent from Ngai Taharora, Te Whanau a Iritekura, and Te Whanau a Rakairo o Ngati Porou. Jahnke graduated with Bachelor and Masters degrees in Fine Arts from the University of Auckland, Elam School of Fine Art. Subsequently he also completed a Master in Experimental Animation at the California Institute of the Arts. His Doctor of Māori Studies, He tataitanga ahua toi : the house that Riwai built, a continuum of Māori art, was conferred by Massey University in 2006.

Jahnke is Professor of Māori Visual Arts at Massey University and was seminal in the founding of the Toioho ki Āpiti within Whiti o Rehua School of Art in 1991. Through his research practice Jahnke works as an artist, writer and curator, focusing "on the dynamics of inter-cultural exchange and the politics of identity."
