Richard Deacon was born in Wales and studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art, both in London.
Calling himself a 'fabricator' rather than a sculptor, Deacon's works are generally sinuous abstract forms made in common place materials.
He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1987, and a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1999.
