Neville Porteous

b. 1943d. 2022

Neville Porteous trained as a teacher but subsequently turned to potting in the 1970s. By the 1990s, he and partner Gill had established their ceramic production business Porteous Tiles in their house in Khandallah. The house itself was designed and built by Athfield Architects between 1969-1975. Ben and Sarah Porteous (children of Neville and Gill) joined Porteous Tiles and continue the family tile making tradition.

Porteous Tiles specialise in artisan glazes, "combin[ing] traditional methods for making hand made tiles with some innovative new techniques that have been fine tuned and perfected over the years. Tile production begins with a very high quality semi-porcelain clay chosen for its beautiful white colour and high firing suitability." They make a range of heritage reproduction tiles matching colours and patterns from different eras as well as bespoke designs.
