Martin Bailey studied at the Wellington Polytechnic School of Visual Communication Design (now Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts, Massey University), graduating in 1979. He freelanced as an illustrator (specialising in airbrush), working for designers, ad agencies and children’s publishers for over 25 years in Wellington, Sydney, Auckland, Tokyo, and San Francisco.
More recently he has been working as a storyboard artist for TV commercials and movies, as well as publishing his own range of children’s books.
