Lyndon Smith studied sculpture at Elam School of Art (University of Auckland) in the 1950s, and went on to exhibit works with the likes of Molly Macalister, Jim Allen and Alison Duff. His early pieces were said to display the influence of British Modern sculptors such as Henry Moore.
In 1964 Lyndon was commissioned to produce a 'bronze family group’ for the Hall of Memories in the National War Memorial in Wellington. This was followed with a very large commission - described as 'the largest piece of public sculpture in the country… 20ft high' - in bronze and coloured glass for the south forecourt of Vogel Building on Aitken St, Wellington, designed by the Ministry of Works.
In 1971, after many tribulations, Lyndon completed a large sculptural composition in Coromandel granite for Northcote Shopping Centre. This work, repeatedly moved and broken, has been preserved as a single piece, "resited" when the Centre was renovated in 1998.
