Kerk Taylor

b. 1938d. 2016

Kerk Taylor was an artist and arts educator. During his earlier years, Taylor spent time as a specialist arts advisor in schools as part of the renowned Gordon Tovey scheme, which helped teachers inspire children to express themselves through art, music and drama.

He was primarily a sculptor, working in wood, stone, ceramic and bronze. He set up home-studio foundries where he cast his bronzes, first in Napier where he was based for many years, and later in Miramar, Wellington, where he relocated in the 1990s. During this later period he also worked as a tutor at the Inverlochy Art School in Wellington, and was a guest tutor at the Central Institute of Technology and Whitireia Polytechnic.

He had several exhibitions throughout New Zealand and participated in two of the Tareitanga Sculpture Symposia, first in 1995, and again in 1997.

His son, Inia Taylor, is also an artist.
