Also known as:

  • Jack Baker

John Baker was an English stained glass artist, restorer, author, and teacher. He studied at the Central School in London and worked under James Hogan at the Whitefriars Glass Limited before joining Samuel Caldwell Jnr. at Canterbury Cathedral in 1948 to help reinstate the medieval glass that had been removed for safekeeping during the Second World War.

Baker subsequently authored English Stained Glass (1960) illustrated with photographs taken by Alfred Lammer. The revised edition of this work, English Stained glass of the Medieval Period (London; New York: Thames & Hudson, 1978), became one of the most popular soft back books on English medieval glass ever published.

Alongside his conservation skills, Baker also taught at Kingston College of Art. He produced windows for a number of churches including, "his favourite works:" the windows he produced for the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell, New Zealand.

He married the illustrator Hilary Stebbing in 1946.
