Gavin Britt

b. 1940d. 2018

Gavin Britt grew up in Christchurch and trained as a primary school teacher at Christchurch Teachers' College. There he met Cath Brown who guided Britt into an interest in art. Britt specialised as an art teacher, working at Cobham and Breens Intermediate Schools.

He developed a collaborative working method with students and adults to produce murals and carvings based in Māori mythology and traditional craft techniques such as whakairo (carving) and tukutuku (lattice-work), but using contemporary media. Britt also made and played taonga pūoro (Māori musical instruments).
