Description

"Under the glass and steel canopy above the Federal Street forecourt of 135 Albert Street, this sculpture is formed from a continuous loop of boxed aluminium sections – although it could be mistaken for tangled bronze. The sculpture dominates the forecourt, pushing up against the ceiling, and contrasts with the surrounding glass, steel and hard lines of the 90s architecture towering above. Welsh artist Richard Deacon was inspired by the site and by his wanderings among twisted pōhutukawa trees along the Coromandel coast. The style of the sculpture is similar to other works by the artist, who is known for combining organic curves and industrial materials and using complex engineering to manipulate those materials in unexpected ways. ASB Bank commissioned Richard Deacon to produce this public artwork when developing the site for its new headquarters in 1991."
