Christchurch City Council

The current Christchurch City Council was formed through the 1989 local government reforms when the functions of the former Christchurch City Council, Heathcote County Council, Riccarton Borough Council, Waimairi District Council, part of Paparua County Council, and the Christchurch Drainage Board were amalgamated. In March 2006 Banks Peninsula District Council also merged.

The Council encompasses six Community Boards and holds shares, via Christchurch City Holdings, in Lyttelton Port, Christchurch International Airport, City Care (infrastructure company), Orion (electricity), Selwyn Plantation Board, Enabled Networks (telecomunications), Red Bus and Ecocentral Ltd (recycling).

The public art collection of Christchurch City Council is administered by Toi Tūmatanui/Public Arts.
