Derek Kerwood was born in Southampton, UK. He moved to the Waitako, New Zealand, and taught woodwork at Melville High School.
Kerwood was a member of the Waikato Guild of Woodworkers, till he moved to Tauranga and joined the Tauranga Woodcrafters Guild.
